MABEL ERNESTINE CHALCROFT (nee CURISTON) Mabel was born July 18, 1917 and died on March 9, 2008 (on what was the 67th anniversary of her marriage). Mabel was born in Petersfield, Manitoba, the sixth of the nine children born to Jessie and Charles Curiston, and the granddaughter of William and Martha Curiston who came west from Ontario in the 1880s to homestead in Balmoral, Manitoba. On March 9, 1941, Mabel married Clayton (Squint) Chalcroft, and spent the war years travelling back and forth across the country as Squint was posted to various R.C.A.F. bases. Son David arrived in late 1942 and the young family settled in West Kildonan when Squint was discharged from the R.C.A.F. in August 1945. They spent the next 47 years at 317 Belmont Avenue, with Mabel working for most of those years at the Eaton's store on Portage Avenue. A few years after Squint passed away in 1992, Mabel moved to Calgary to be closer to son David and grandkids, James and Kim, and arrived just in time to welcome her four great-grandchildren, Cian, Cole, Cooper and Grace. Mabel made many friends over the years wherever she went - she was a happy social person with a gift of the gab - in fact she made it practically an Olympic sport, and kept in touch with all wings of the family and friends wherever they were in the world. If someone wanted to catch up on so-and-so all they had to do was give Mabel a call. A proud Manitoban she was particularly delighted a few weeks ago when Manitoba's Jennifer Jones defeated Alberta to win the Scott Tournament of Hearts curling final. Mabel is survived by her son David and daughter-in-law Margaret, granddaughter and trusted caregiver Kim, grandson James (Susie); four great-grandkids, Cian, Cole, Cooper, and Grace; sisters, Gladys Lloyd, and Edith Dell, and brother Earl; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Clayton; brothers, Frank, Gordon, Lawrence, and Ernie and sister Pearl. The family would like to thank the staff at the Edgemont Seniors Residence and all Mabel's friends at Carroll Place, the nursing and medical staff at Foothills Medical Centre, most recently Emergency and Unit 81, the Sarcee CareWest Staff, and Dr. David Todd who gave Mabel such wonderful care in recent years. In lieu of flowers, Mabel would like you to make a donation to either the Heart and Stroke or Cancer Foundations. Mabel Chalcroft - A FULL LIFE AND A LIFE FULFILLED Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Mabel will be laid to rest alongside her beloved Squint in the Glen Eden Cemetery. GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 338-7111
