Date of Passing: Mar 23, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMETRO ATAMANCHUK Peacefully on Easter Morning, March 23, 2008, Metro passed away at Extendicare Oakview Place Care Home with God at his side at the age 80 years. Metro was the oldest child of Steven and Mary Atamanchuk. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Lillian, of 44 years, his only son Nick (Karen), and his best friend his grandson, Zachery. Metro will also be missed his brother John (Olga), sisters, Elsie (Lloyd) and Margaret (Bill), brother-in-law George (Sylvia), also numerous nieces and nephews. Metro was born on September 16, 1927 in Fishing River, MB. He worked the family farm till he moved to Winnipeg in 1948. At that time Metro started to work at Gibson's Bowling Alleys and discovered one of his lifelong passions, bowling. This passion would bring him two perfect things; a perfect 450 Game and the Love of his Life - Lillian. Following a short courtship the two were married on August 15, 1964, and together purchased their home and started a family with the birth of their son, Nick. Metro started a new career at Emco Supply in 1965 where he worked for 24 years as the head country shipper. During his employment with Emco, Metro's dedication, promptness and exceptional work ethic was passed onto many trainees he took under his wing. Fellow past co-workers to this day were glad and proud to have Metro in their lives. Metro was a man of his work and would always offer a helping hand. Metro's other pleasures were fastball (playing and watching), coaching hockey, card games and trips to the Casino. His sidekicks Skip, Bow and Kobe (various dogs he owned) were always at his side whether at home or at the lake in Gimli. When Zachery entered his life and Metro became the greatest caregiver on the planet, taking this responsibility to the max. Metro was always there to chauffeur and encourage Zachery in every activity he was involved in (soccer, swimming, school band, karate). Metro's motto was never to be late for anything in his life which he made sure was followed when Zachery was involved. Our family would like to express our thanks to all the staff at Oakveiw that made his last year as special as it was. Pallbearers, Stephen Atamanchuk, Dale Atamanchuk, Dan Vermeylen, Gord Wong, George Glanfield, Harold Quinlan and Terry Orsulak. Dad, you will be forever in our hearts and in our memories. Bye for Now. Low mass will be said on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and a reception will be held in the reception center at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Metro Atamanchuk's name to the Alzheimer's Society, the Winnipeg Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
