WILFRED HERBERT (FRED) EBY On Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Carman Memorial Hospital, Wilfred Herbert (Fred) Eby, aged 97 years, beloved husband of the late Bertha Verena Eby (nee Sutton) of Carman, MB. A memorial service was held at the Carman United Church on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Catherine Waldie officiating. Interment took place at the Fairview Cemetery, Roland. Fred was born in Sperling, Manitoba son of Levi and Ada Eby, one in a family of 10 children. He left Sperling with his family at the age of three to move to Carman. He attended school in Carman receiving his Grade 11 education. After completing Grade 11 he worked as a teller at the Bank of Commerce in Miami, Manitoba for three years. His father got ill and Fred quit the bank to come home and help with the implement business. He joined the Air Force in July of 1940 and was trained as a pilot in Toronto. Fred saw a lot of active service in England. First he was a fighter pilot with a Spitfire squadron and then transferred to heavy bombers. He came home to marry Bertha V. Sutton in August of 1944 and then returned overseas. He returned home in October of 1945 to start a drycleaning plant in Carman which he ran until 1957 when he sold it to Carm Colvin. In 1957 he applied for the Carman Town Foreman position and worked at that capacity until he retired in 1969. Fred was a member of the Carman United Church, and loved to play hockey and curl. He was president of the Carman Golf Club for seven years, and received his 60 Year Legion membership pin in 2004, and the Meritorius Service Medal from the Royal Canadian Legion Carman Branch # 18 for his service and dedication. Fred was predeceased by his parents Levis and Ada Eby and by three brothers and six sisters, Hazel Eby, Lloyd Eby, Olive Sim, Bertha Forbes, Stella Eby, Dorothy Lyons, Viola Elias, Stanley Eby, and Norris Eby. Fred is survived by many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is one niece that was like a daughter to Fred and Bertha, Linda Fehr of Morden, Manitoba.
