DR. ALEXANDRA PAWLOWSKY Peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2008, Dr. Alexandra Pawlowsky passed away at the age of 55. Alexandra will be deeply missed by her husband Boris Jacenkiw, mother Anastasia Pawlowsky, brother Myron Pawlowsky and sister-in-law Susan Boulter, nephew and niece Alexander and Adriana Pawlowsky, aunts and uncles Anna and Mychajlo Gembarsky, Olga and Walter Klopick, and Anna Luka, also cousins Stephan, Michael and Bohdan Gembarsky, Chris and Zenon Klopick, and Evhenia Kryschuk and Myroslaw Luka. Also mourning her passing are her sister-in-law Tanya Jacenkiw (Dan Huwel) and nephew Roman in Chicago. Alexandra was predeceased by her father Peter Pawlowsky, aunt Mary Smerechuk, and grandparents Maria and Ivan Smerechuk, and Semen and Kateryna Pawlowsky. Alexandra was born and raised in Winnipeg. She received her B.A. and M.A. (Slavic Studies) at the University of Manitoba. She was very proud of the interdisciplinary Ph.D. she earned at the University of Manitoba, in Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies, believed to be the first such Ph.D. in the world. She taught at the University of Manitoba for 26 years, and held senior administrative positions at the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies, and as Coordinator of the University 1 program. Alexandra was the recipient of many dozens of scholarships and awards to further her studies. Her research interests were in the field of Ukrainian Canadian literature and language. She presented papers on related topics at academic conferences throughout North America, and published numerous reviews and other publications. Considered a Ukrainian Canadian pop culture specialist, she was often interviewed on a broad spectrum of topics related to Ukrainian Canadiana, by the CBC, Canadian Press, the Globe Mail, and CJOB, among many others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir Olga, the University 1 program at the University of Manitoba, or the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies at the University of Manitoba. Panakhyda (prayers) will be sung on Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir Olga, 115 McGregor St. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, April 3 at 10:00 a.m., also at the cathedral, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Walter, Chris and Zenon Klopick, and Stephan, Bohdan and Michael Gembarsky. Honorary pallbearers are Myron Pawlowsky, Susan Boulter, Dr. Bronislaw and Orysia Gorski, Oksana Bondarchuk, and Maria Stolarskyj. The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to Dr. Krepart and the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, and to all the staff at the Women's Hospital, especially Lilly. Very special thanks to Dr. Bronislaw and Orysia Gorski for all their support, and to Sister Daria for her pastoral care. Boris' devotion to Alexandra during her final weeks and months was exemplary.   • I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my longtime childhood friend Lesia. She was an accomplished academic and a tremendous asset to the Ukrainian Canadian community. My deepest sympathies go out to the entire family.
