DAN CHOMA It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Dan Choma on August 25, 2008 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Dan was glad to have celebrated his 75th birthday earlier this year. Dan was predeceased by his loving wife Alice (nee Balabuk) with whom he was married for 31 years and his mother Ann. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his son Glen (Monica) granddaughters Jennifer and Sarah and daughter Sylvia, grandchildren Nicole and Liam. Born and raised in Sioux Lookout, ON, Dan started working in bush camps hauling pulp with a team of horses. He also worked doing highway construction before hiring out as a fireman on Steam Engines at CN Railway in 1952. He was promoted to Locomotive Engineer and moved to Winnipeg in 1976 where he worked until he retired February 1, 1991. Dan enjoyed curling, watching baseball and travelling to Las Vegas and Northwestern Ontario. Dan always enjoyed being in the bush picking mushrooms and blueberries. He loved taking his children and grandchildren with him to share his knowledge and love of the bush. Dan had a warm spot in his heart for animals. Giddo always had a treat for the family dogs and chocolate bars for the grandchildren. In Dad's last few days before going into the hospital he enjoyed going for rides with his daughter and grandchildren. We must have visited every ice cream parlor in the city. Dad sure enjoyed his ice cream as each and every ice cream cone was better than the last. A special thank you from the family to the staff of the Palliative Care unit at St. Boniface Hospital for the compassionate care he received. As per Dan's wishes, a private family burial will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Cancer Society or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
