MARGARET HAWLEY SPEERS Margaret Speers, formerly of Wellington Crescent, passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on September 26, 2008 at the age of 100 years. She was predeceased by her father in 1950, mother in 1972 and brother Joseph in 1978. Born on February 18, 1908 in Alexander, Manitoba. Margaret attended Alexander School, Brandon College, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Manitoba receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree. She had a lengthy career in teaching, first as Principal of schools in Saskatchewan at Ravenscrag and Scotsguard, and then in Manitoba at Basswood, Newdale and Miniota before coming to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, Margaret taught first at Rupertsland Girls' School and then in Winnipeg School District No. 1 at Cecil Rhodes, River Heights and Kelvin High School. Since her retirement she has enjoyed travel, and various forms of volunteer work, including that at the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She was also a member of St. Andrew's River Heights United Church. Margaret was spry and engaged in life to the very end. She greatly enjoyed her contacts with her many friends and neighbours, and took a keen interest in world events. She was very pleased to be able to host her 100th birthday party in her own home in February of this year. Thanks to the staff from Drake Medox Health Services who provided the care and support that allowed Margaret to remain independent, as she so strongly desired.
