ROBERT (BOB) SMART Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 29, 1944, I, Robert (Bob) Smart died on September 26, 2008 after a lengthy illness with ALS. I leave behind me my beloved partner, Teresa; my son, Colin Smart and his wife, Tanya; my daughter, Lauren Paquette and her husband, Rene and my pretty granddaughter, Breanne; my sister in the U.K., Jane Potter; and my nephew, Richard Potter of Bahrein. I was predeceased by my father, Richard Smart, and my mother, Edith Smart, as well as numerous friends, along with my wonderful little Cairn Terrier, Mac, who I long to see if there is indeed an after-life. I grew up in Regina, but spent most of my adult life in Winnipeg, where I taught at Vincent Massey Collegiate for 37 years. I was fortunate to have had many remarkable students during my career. In my private life I was blessed with wonderful children, great friends and finally, my love, Teresa. I would like to thank my friend Neil Taylor and other friends, who went out of their way to make my life as full as possible during the last two years. I'd also like to thank Dr. Garnet Crawford of the palliative care ward at St. Boniface Hospital for his understanding and support. A memorial service will be held at Canad Inns, 1824 Pembina Hwy. on October 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. where all are welcome to share their memories. In lieu of flowers contributions should be made to the ALS Society.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Mr Smart believed in me as a creative and intelligent person. I was a student at Vincent Massey in the early 1980s. My passion was percussion and I lived for band - went on to to study jazz in University and become a professional musician. I questioned the world at an early age and had many conversations with Mr Smart about life. All these years later, over my lifetime I count him as a mentor and he made an impression that inspires my heart and sense of meaningfulness. I hope Bob found truth and hope on his final days. - Posted by: Sherry (Student) on: Oct 10, 2023

  • I still remember how incredibly passionate and engaging Mr. Smart was as he taught Western Civilization. He stimulated my interest in the French Revolution, among other episodes in history, and that legacy lives on today in the way I think about the world. - Posted by: Robert Lidstone (Student) on: Sep 10, 2017

  • I was Mr. Smart's student at Vincent Massey Collegiate. I still remember him fondly...I was chronically late, and if he saw me walking to school he'd give me a ride so that I'd make it on time. He was always very nice to me and was a great teacher. I was looking his name up because, after all these years, I wanted to say hi. I am crushed to learn that I waited too long. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Nicholas (former student) on: Nov 03, 2013

  • Mr. Smart was one of few teachers in my life who truly believed in me. It made such an impact on my life, I only wish I could have thanked him before he "went on ahead". When he cared enough to ask me what I wanted to make of my life...I said I wanted to be a missionary nurse in Africa. He was one who helped me to believe in myself, that I could accomplish anything. Thank you Mr. Smart for being an awesome teacher/mentor. - Posted by: Barbara , Class of '72 (student) on: Mar 04, 2012
