EDWARD GEORGE PRICE A life that was vigorous, productive, and always interesting has come to an end. Edward Price passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on December 25, 2008 at the age of 78 years. He leaves behind his daughter Valerie (Bill Currie), son David, brother Greg, sister-in-law Gwen, and nephews Ronald and Douglas. He was predeceased by his parents William Newell and Erminie Maud and brother Roy. Born in Willowdale, Ontario, Ed grew up in the area and spent part of his boyhood on family farms. In his youth, he left school and worked for several years as a seaman on the Great Lakes, which planted the seed for his major life's work. After moving to Winnipeg in 1953, he applied his imagination and entrepreneurial spirit to a series of businesses. Over the years these included Abbott Collection Agencies, Auto Brokerage and Auction Company and Waterways Enterprises. In 1970, he launched the MS Poplar River, a freight vessel which he designed and built. So began a 30 career on the waters of Lake Winnipeg carrying freight to northern communities until Captain Ed's retirement in 1999. In the off-season he spent many winters on the Big Island of Hawaii where he built a home that he continued to enjoy into his retirement. In what leisure time he allowed himself, Ed was an avid reader, especially of history, politics, economics, and in later years, theology. Every year he tended a large garden in which raspberries were plentiful. A man of deep faith, Ed devoted much of his energy in his later years to religious studies and to the church where he found friendship, fellowship and support. He will be remembered as an independent thinker who relished a lively discussion and could always be counted on for an opinion or a quip. His many accomplishments are the result of an abiding work ethic, strong will and active intelligence. Until his recent illness, he was a big man with a big personality. He will be missed. A special thank you to all the staff of 6A South at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion towards our Dad over the last few months. A service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Bible Baptist Church, 765 Saskatchewan Avenue W., Portage la Prairie, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
