Iwan was predeceased by his wife, Pearl, in January 2008. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Daria, son-in-law Reese Smilski and grandchildren Gregory and Melanie. Also left to mourn his passing are his brother-in-law Jim Lesawich (Nell), sisters-in-law Eve Hooper (Den) and Olga Reid and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. Iwan was born in the Village of Towstenke, Ukraine, on September 29, 1921. Forced to leave his home and country at the end of the Second World War, he lived for many years in Germany, England and France before coming to Canada in 1961. He married Pearl in 1963. During his time in Europe he became active in movements working for freedom for Ukraine, and continued this activity in Canada as a member of the Canadian League for the Liberation of Ukraine. He was also an active member of the parish of Sts. Vladimir Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. He greatly enjoyed his many years of work at the Provincial Queen's Printer, retiring from his position in 1989. Iwan dearly loved and was very proud of his grandchildren. While in recent years his health no longer permitted him to enjoy active play with them as he once did, he continued to take great joy in their company and was a regular provider of Smarties candy. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 5 at Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir Olga, 115 McGregor Street with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating.
