WILLIAM (BILL) ORVAL DUNSMORE
Born: Mar 22, 1925
Date of Passing: Feb 09, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM (BILL) ORVAL DUNSMORE William (Bill) Orval Dunsmore died suddenly at home on February 9, 2009 at age 83. Bill is survived by wife Dorthi; children, Sandra, Donna (Mel Bernard) and Blair (Joanne); grandchildren, Will Bernard (Hannah) and Jamie Bernard; great-granddaughter Sophia; brother Fred (Margaret); and son-in-law Don Pentland. Bill was born in Winnipeg on March 22, 1925 to Isabel and Orval Dunsmore. He went straight from high school at Daniel Mac into the RCAF in 1943. In 1946, Bill met Dorthi Berry at the YMCA Canoe Club. They married in 1948 while Bill continued his studies to become a Chartered Accountant. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1951 and worked in both the private and public sector for the next 36 years, retiring from his last position at MPI in 1987. Bill was active in sports his entire life. In his younger years, although an accomplished baseball and football player, speed skating was the sport he truly loved. He was also a curler, golfer and runner. In his late sixties, after receiving news from his doctor that he should not run anymore, Bill became a roller blade enthusiast. Much of Bill's volunteer work centered around sports. He was a passionate football coach and a founding Executive Member of the Manitoba Football Coaches Association. A life-time member of the Kinsmen's Reh-Fit Centre, Bill served on its Board of Directors from 1985 - 93. During retirement, he also put his accounting skills to good use as a member of the Board of Directors at Elkhorn Ranch and Resort. Bill was a very fair-minded person who never hesitated to stand up for the people and principles in which he believed. Perhaps his greatest satisfaction in life was in doing what he felt was best for his family. Bill was an exceedingly generous person, always ready to go out of his way to help others. In recent years, Bill experienced a series of health-related challenges. He and Dorthi appreciated the wonderful support from the doctors and staff at the Family Medical Centre, CancerCare, and the St. Boniface Hospital. They were especially thankful to family physician, Dr. Cavett and dentist Dr. Ciric for their care over many years. July 17, 2008, Bill and Dorthi celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2009 at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, across from Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, should friends wish, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 9Z9.
