Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAVINASH (AVI) MEHTA September 16, 1948 - March 12, 2009 Avi passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside at Tuxedo Villa. He will be missed by his family and friends. He was born in Kampala, Uganda where he completed his degree in law before immigrating to Winnipeg in 1973 during the expulsion of Asians from Uganda. He was a scholar, a great sportsman, a master and humorous orator with the Toastmasters and a kind gentle person. He volunteered with several charitable organizations. He worked hard and was instrumental in the success of Unicity Tennis Club for almost two decades until his health betrayed him to take early disability. He battled his illnesses with tremendous courage and dignity and was grateful for the support he received from his family, friends, and all the care providers during his prolonged illnesses. Avi was predeceased by his father Mr. A.G. Mehta in 1969 and his mother Mrs. Savitaben Mehta in 1996. He loved his sisters and was proud of their achievements. They will sadly miss him. They are Asha Madhvani (late Rajnikant) in Uganda, Dr. Asita Mehta (Mark McDonald) in Winnipeg, Dr. Alka Pabari (Sunil) and Aditi Rajani (Urvesh) in England. Avi was loved by his nieces, Maya and Serena, in Winnipeg, Teesta and Anushka in England and nephews, Shameel and Shin in Winnipeg and Neal in England. He was a great role model and a mentor for them. They will miss his fun and wisdom. Avi will leave a void in the lives of his uncles and aunts in Winnipeg. They are Manjula Mehta (late Hiralal), Suren Mehta (Chandrakala), Dr. Pravin Mehta (Kalpana) and Natu Radia. Avi cherished the time they and the cousins spent with him, specially Bhawna Thakrar (Kirit Thakrar), Priti Mehta Shah (Dr. Paresh Shah), Anokhi Mehta Sachdev (Jeewan Sachdev), Rahul Mehta (Priti), Amit Mehta (Shalu), Jiten Mehta (Rani), Nish Mehta (Smita), Mehul Mehta. They will miss his counsel. The family wishes to thank all those who made Avi comfortable during his illness especially Dr. M. Burke, staff at Tuxedo Villa, Dr. D. Hershberg, Victoria General Hospital, St. Boniface General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Joyce, Rosalind, Vern and Hasmukh Pandya for their unconditional affection, attention and companionship to Avi at all times. Funeral service will be at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Saturday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. followed by prayers at The Hindu Temple, 999 St. Anne's Rd. at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hindu Temple or the Victoria Hospital Foundation. Avi, a class mate of incredible genius, unassuming intelligence - and ability to mimick the greatest comedians of the day to keep everyone entertained - Avi - you will never be forgotten by those mates who loved you - all 32 of us.... Avi was like a brother and miss his quick wit and wisdom A caring, courageous and considerate human being. A victim of circumstances beyond his control personally and politically.
