EDWARD JAMES SWAIN
Date of Passing: May 03, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD JAMES SWAIN 1951 - 2009 Peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2009, Edward James Swain passed away suddenly at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg. Ted is survived by his wife Joan; his father Gordon; two daughters, Kristina and Natalie and his brother, Les (Linda). He was predeceased by his mother, Jean and his brother, Bill. Born in Winnipeg on September 30, 1951 to Gordon and Jean Swain, Ted grew up with two older brothers, Les and Bill. After attending Dakota High School, he studied English Literature at the University of Manitoba before going into Education. It was there that he got to know Joan Matthews who would become his wife on August 25, 1973. Ted and Joan travelled extensively in their early life, spending a year driving through Europe and North Africa in a VW van and, later on, Ted loved the family's yearly trip to Mexico. Ted and Joan had two children, Natalie in 1984 and Kristina in 1986. Ted's primary concern was always his family, which allowed him to expand his love of cooking. Ted always remained young in spirit, recently taking up long distance running and cruising the town on his Vespa. Ted loved to run, as illustrated by his stack of finishing medals, and leaves behind many friends with whom he ran. We were all proud when he completed his first marathon in June 2004, a second in Reykjavik in August 2007 and numerous half-marathons, including one in Toronto with his wife in September 2008. We will miss his Harrison Ford smile, watching him outwit the Jeopardy! contestants and his green thumb. Most of all, we will miss Dad for his constant encouragement and support, his quiet humour and enthusiasm for life. A private, family service will be held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations in Ted's name may be made to the Swain Family Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 - One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0X3. Chapel Lawn 885-9715

Mr. Swain was my English teacher in grade 7. He spired me to write and complimented my style. (Then he gave me 4/10 because I used sentence fragments!) My first book was published in 2015 and I just finished another. I looked him up to reach out and tell him how he inspired me and found his obituary. I was so sorry to see this, but as a fellow runner and marathon coach, I was compelled to leave a tribute. To proper sentences, long, thoughtful runs and always coloring outside the lines. (Sentence fragment) Thank you for your inspiration!! - Posted by: Kristina Nelson Hill (Student) on: Aug 26, 2021
