EDWARD G. HIRD Peacefully on March 26, 2010, Edward Greig Hird, passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 77. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Betty, daughter Tracey Hird-Franklin, son-in-law Rick, cherished grandchildren Matthew and Mark Franklin, his son Mark Hird, and daughter-in-law Marlene. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Anna Stewart (Neil), his lifelong friend Ron Light, and godson Garth Light. Ed was predeceased by his parents John, and Mary Hird. Ed was born September 24, 1932, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His youth was spent in Weston where he attended Cecil Rhodes and Daniel Mac Schools. Some of Ed's favourite times were spent with his Duke buddies, playing football and playing for the Winnipeg Nationals Hockey team. Ed had many interesting careers, which included working as a journeyman lineman, a police officer, and lastly as the Claims Supervisor for the City of Winnipeg, retiring in 1987. Ed enjoyed spending many hours woodworking, whether it was for himself or his many friends. His most loved project was building the family cottage at Long Pine Lake. The Lake was a place where Ed truly excelled - having his morning coffee, then putting on the tool belt, and getting on with the next project. Ed took his acquired skills down south to Palm Springs where again he spent countless hours puttering at his winter home. Shuffling was a big part of Ed's Palm Springs activities, and was a natural transition from his years of curling in Winnipeg. Ed's involvement with curling was extensive, having been Past President and Honourary Life Member of the Heather Curling Club. Ed truly was one of kind. He went through life with a great sense of humour, never without a smile. He was an incredible teacher and a generous, giving man. His love for his wife, children, grandchildren and circle of friends was endless. He will be missed.
