MARGARETA (ZAHNER) FREUNDL March 20, 1926 - March 27, 2010 Our mother, sister, Tante, and Oma died suddenly and peacefully on March 27, 2010. She leaves behind her husband, Martin, they had been married for 59 years. She is also survived by her son, Franz (Yvonne); daughter, Barbara (Al) Simmons; grandchildren, Karl (Amanda), Will (Leah), Brad, Jessica, Sharon; and great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlin, and Marley; her sisters Kunigunde, Anna, and Barbara. Her brothers Schorsch and Hans predeceased her, as did her parents, Friedrich and Barbara. Mom was born in Loffeld, Bavaria, Germany in 1926. After meeting Martin, marrying and having their two children, they immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1956. Mom worked as a seamstress to help provide for the family. She taught herself to read, write and speak English, starting with her children's schoolbooks. In 1971, they moved onto a quarter section of land east of Anola. So she wouldn't feel isolated on the farm, mom got her drivers license for the first time in her mid 40s and enjoyed being a chauffeur for her neighbours and friends. The farm filled up with cattle, chickens, pigeons, pigs, rabbits, along with Martin's horses, Duster and Charlie. Mom made her own butter, sauerkraut and more. No matter where they lived, her flower gardens were glorious and her vegetable gardens were bountiful - even the poorest of soil would be coaxed into producing lush abundance. She was quite proud of being born on the first day of spring and her gardening skills seemed as natural as the change in seasons. Mom was a very private person yet she was always friendly, helpful and enjoyed being with children. She especially loved being with her grand and great-grandchildren. She will be missed. We would like to say thanks for the excellent care provided at the Beausejour Hospital, and a special thanks to Dr. D. Schmidt. Her professionalism and caring were greatly appreciated. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation and a private celebration have already taken place. In lieu of flowers, please plant some.... and some vegetables, too.
