ANN PORTMAN (nee Vlemmiks) Sadly, we announce the death of our wife, mother and grandmother, Ann Portman, on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Pinawa Hospital at the age of 66 years. Remaining to forever cherish her memory are her husband, Roger of 47 years of marriage; children, Deb (Mark), Kate (Dave) and Tina (Barry); and granddaughter Samantha. Born in England in 1943, Ann was a war baby. She and Roger sailed to Canada on the Empress of Canada in 1968 and built a life in Pinawa, Manitoba for 40 years. After a 25-year career she retired from Whiteshell Nuclear Research Laboratories as Human Resources Advisor. Ann was a life-long volunteer. In the early years, she worked with the Pinawa Hospital Auxiliary and Canadian Figure Skating Association. At the age of 60, she ran her first marathon to raise money for the Arthritis Society. After retirement, Ann volunteered with the Pinawa Justice Committee and the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO). For CESO, she shared her professional skills with over 30 First Nations in Manitoba and Northern Ontario. She was awarded the Manitoba Premier's Volunteer Service Award and the International Year of the Volunteers Award by the Government of Canada. As she wished, Ann will be laid to rest at a small family service. If you would like to celebrate her life with us, in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Arthritis Society, 105 -386 Broadway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 3R6 or to the Children's Wish Foundation, 350 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 3J2.
