SARWAN SINGH ATWAL (1945 2010) It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and husband after a hard-fought battle with cancer on April 21. Sarwan will be greatly missed by his wife Baljit, of 39 years; his children, Manpreet (Sharan) and Jasdeep (Jamie); his grand-children Nira, Aniya and Sonia; his in-laws Pritam (Prakash), Surjit (Jaswant), Santokh (Paramjit), Kuldip (Daljit), his nephews and nieces, his sister Harbhajan (Didar), his brothers Balwant, Taranjit (Gurpal), Satwant (Swaranjit) and many other close relatives and friends. His wife and children were with him during his last moments. Sarwan was born on November 3, 1945 in Asansol, India and had lived a very fulfilling life. At a young age, Sarwan served his home country of India in uniform. Soon after, he met Baljit and they were married in 1970. In 1971, Manpreet was born and Sarwan decided to move his family to Canada to look for new opportunities. He started his new adventure residing in Dauphin for a short while before settling on Winnipeg as the home for his family. He worked extremely hard to support his young and now growing family with the birth of Jasdeep in 1975. In 1977, he started as a machinist at CNR where he quickly became very good friends with everyone he worked with. He had a sense of humour and energy which few people could resist. He was well respected by everyone. He retired in 2005 from the railroad and started a new career with his own business to pass the time. Sarwan was actively involved within his community, and was very dedicated to the Singh Sabha Gurdwara. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at CancerCare Manitoba, The Health Sciences Centre, the home care workers, and Grace Hospice for their support and kindness. He will be remembered for being a good husband, father, and friend. His infectious spark will be deeply missed by all. Akhand Path will be at the family's home starting Friday at noon. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, April 25 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home (1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg) at 2:00 pm. Afterwards, there will be Bhog at Gurdwara Singh Sabha (4000 Sturgeon Rd.). In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to CancerCare Manitoba.
