ROBBIE IRENE SAWATZKY Peacefully, on April 24, 2010 our Mom, Robbie Sawatzky, passed away at Park Manor Personal Care Home. Mom not only battled with Post Polio Syndrome, but also battled with Dementia and Parkinsons. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Bob in 1990. Also her Mother and Father of Portage la Prairie, her brother Frank, of BC and her sister, Evelyn of Ontario. Mom was survived by her son, Russell, of Cambridge (Deborah); daughters, Debra-Lee of Winnipeg (Bob) and Carol of BC (Myles); as well as her two grandsons, Garrett and Shayne. Mom was born and raised in Portage La Prairie. After schooling in Portage, she moved to Winnipeg, graduated from Scientific School of Beauty and worked as a hairdresser. Soon after that, Mom was struck with Polio. Doctors told her she would never walk again. She walked for 50 years! A fighter then and a fighter right to the end. Somehow, Mom always knew how to deal with difficult times with her sense of humour, which made those times easier. Mom was a beautiful knitter and a beautiful sewer. Her real love though, was animals. When she wasn't adopting a homeless pet, she was nursing one back to good health, or feeding the ducks in St. Vital Park. Mom and Dad married in 1946. When they weren't parenting us, they were parenting foster children. The family spent many summers camping in Grand Beach. Mom loved to skate, swim and travel, especially to Maui, and often would be seen crossing the border every chance she had. The family would like to thank our cousin, Terry Russell (Yi-Fang) for the countless visits with Mom, and never going empty handed, Bailey's, chocolates, or a pretty bouquet of flowers. As well, the family would like to thank the staff at Park Manor for the loving care they gave Mom, along with the understanding and support they gave us during the five years Mom was there. Thank-you staff at Park Manor. A service will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Park Manor, 301 Redonda Street. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3. Til we meet again, Mom. Absent with the body is to be present with the Lord.
