HUGH COATES December 8, 1930 - April 30, 2010 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh on Friday, April 30, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty; his son Jeff, grandchildren Evan and Stacy; his daughter Maureen Thomas (Ralph), grandchildren Allison and Erin, and his son Bryan (Cathy). He was predeceased by his parents Tom and Connie Coates. Dad was born in the Souris Hospital, and grew up on the family farm in Lauder, Manitoba. He moved with his parents to Winnipeg in the early 1950s, and after a short stint working for Baldy Northcott's Sporting Goods, he started working for Winnipeg Electric Railway Company where he was to meet his future wife, Betty. After getting married, Dad and Mum moved to St. James, where they've resided ever since. Hugh worked for Winnipeg Transit for many years until he retired as Manager of Treasury in 1987. Dad was supportive of his kids' activities and was a Cub Scout leader for several years. The family has fond memories of annual camping trips to various locations in Western Canada. Dad also had a lifelong love of aviation, building scale model aircraft, and reading military history. In more recent years, Dad enjoyed meeting the guys for coffee at the Salisbury House at the Courts. He and Mum always enjoyed dancing and attended monthly dances at The Gates. The family gives their heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and nursing staff of the I.C.U. and the 3rd floor of Grace Hospital; your caring treatment of Dad is much appreciated. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of one's choice.
