JOSEPH CRAWFORD GARDINER HOWIE Surrounded by family, Dad passed away on May 2, 2010, at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Sharon (Peter) Sloggett, Dr. Ken Howie (Barb), Sandy (Patrick) Metcalfe, Donna (Paul) Sorby, and Jeff Howie (Heather); grandchildren, Heather (Patrick) Fung, Paul (Donna) Sloggett, Brad Howie (Angela), Amy Howie (Scott), Jayme and Jennifer Metcalfe, Katelyn and Jillian Howie; and great-grandchildren Madison and Kennedy Fung, Quinn Sloggett, Ava and Jake Howie, as well as many friends and relatives. Dad was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Grace; his parents Robert and Jamina; his brother Robert; an infant son Gregory and grandson Ken Sorby. Dad was born April 12, 1923 in Winnipeg. He resided in the West End on Strathcona Street until his retirement, attending Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where he met Grace. Dad served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1943 to 1945 as one of the few Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flight officers assigned to the RAF, completing 35 missions over Germany as a bombardier in a Lancaster bomber. He married Grace upon his return from service in June 1945. After his Second World War service, Dad worked for the railroad for a short time before joining Wilson Gregory Lumber where he became an owner until his retirement in 1983. For over 40 years, Dad loved his summers with family at the cottage he built at Moose Lake, Manitoba. After retirement, he spent every winter in Mesa, Arizona where he made many new friends. In 1996 Mom and Dad sold their cottage at Moose Lake and moved to their present home in Paradise Village in Ste. Anne. Humble, very much a family man, and always a gentleman, Dad's friends from Strathcona Street, Moose Lake, Mesa and Paradise Village were especially important to him. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will take place on Monday, May 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with a reception to follow. One smile for all, One heart of gold, One of the best this world could hold. Never selfish, always kind, What a beautiful memory to leave behind. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
