OLLIE (OLGA) HILLMAN (nee GORY) May 11, 1915 - January 28, 2010 Predeceased by her beloved husband Finn and her parents, Ollie leaves behind her two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric (Barb), Barry (Bonita); brother Nick (Olive), grandchildren Ingrid (David), Livia (Tim); Craig (Christine), Kirsten (Duncan) and their children Ewen and Jack. Mom was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother whose main passion in life was her family. She was an intellect in her own right, possessing a keen sense of social responsibility and social justice. She enjoyed summers at Winnipeg Beach, her weekly sewing circles, socializing with lifelong friends in Winnipeg, visiting Eric and Barb in Lethbridge and dear friend Angela in Toronto, church activities, meaningful conversations, causes, travelling to Cuba, and the Soviet Union. Mom travelled to the Ukraine where her Mother was born and was thrilled to be honoured by the whole village at a celebratory dinner. Mom always spoke so fondly about the family trip to visit Dad's family in Denmark. Our Danish family became her family and she kept in close contact over the years. Mom loved music having played the bass mandolin with the Ukrainian Labour Temple orchestra as a young woman, and was so grateful for the talented musicians that would hold concerts at Golden Links Lodge. She was always given a place of honour at the front, no matter what time she arrived at the concert. Mom worked for many years at Eaton's downtown, in the grill room products, the china department and South Seas gift shop, and would often talk about her experiences with emotion and longing. Mom was among the first to open up a bed and breakfast in Winnipeg and met many friends from all over North America and abroad. Later in life, Mom enjoyed visits from Eric and Barb, family brunches, visits to the malls, family celebrations, taking drives with Barry and Bonita to City Park, and especially driving past all the homes that she lived in during her life in Winnipeg, before moving to Golden Links Lodge in 2005. Mom will be remembered as the World's best mom and grandmother. She was so very proud of her sons and there was never a grandmother who bragged more about her grandchildren. Mom's generosity, wit, undeniable up-beat attitude during life's most dramatic changes, being there to lend a helping hand of those in need, her famous cabbage rolls, baked Alaska and recipe for mustard plaster appearing in Arthur Black's CBC book, are just a few treasured memories. Mom will be forever in all of our hearts! We love you Mom - Grandma, and will miss you dearly! A memorial service is being held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent, Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
