Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHANSGUENTHER WILHELM FRICKE Bravely, with his family at his side, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of HGW Fricke on May 10, 2010 at the age of 89. HGW is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gitta, children Andrea Cibinel, Yutta, Moni (Bruce Martin), Christopher (Yumiko), and grandchildren Matthew, Katie, Elena, Nichola, Alexander, Stefanie and Lucas. HGW was predeceased by his cherished son Rolf, in 1963 at the age of seven. HGW was born on April 13, 1921 in Oldenburg, Germany, to Rudolf and Ellen Fricke. He spent much of his youth in Persia, where he learned Farsi, one of his nine languages. An animated storyteller, some of his most colourful tales stemmed from this period in his life. Following the difficult war years, he pursued his post-secondary education in Oriental studies. In 1954, HGW immigrated to Canada, which he was proud to call home. Shortly thereafter he established the Deutsche Buch-Gesellschaft, promoting German language and literature across Canada. He loved global travel, was an avid stamp collector, and a founding member of the German Wine Society. The Ancient Landmark Lodge recently helped HGW celebrate 60 years as a Free Mason. HGW took great pride in the accomplishments of his wife, children and grandchildren, encouraging a well-rounded education in each. Favourite family moments included opportunities for him to make a toast and recite poetry - often in a language not understood by his audience. His presence among family, friends and Stammtisch will be greatly missed. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street, Winnipeg. Thank you, staff of the Grace Hospital, for your gentle care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LiteracyWORKS, Winnipeg.
