WILLIAM LEONARD PEDRICK June 14, 1929 June 2, 2010 After a brief battle with cancer, Len leaves his wife Mary, children Kathryn (Jean-Pierre), Leslie (Brad Goerzen) and Derek (Lisa) and grandchildren Riley and Zachary (Goerzen), Chantal and Dominique (Romano) and Lauryn and Ty (Pedrick). Len was predeceased by his father Harold, mother Clara and brothers Jack and Roy. Len grew up in Transcona and graduated from Central School. His first job at a service station on North Main, financed the purchase of his first car, a 1929 Ford. Len then started his long and dedicated career with CNR, working through a variety of positions from machinist to Supervisor of Quality Control at the Transcona Shops. In September 1957, Len married Mary Wright and started their family in 1960 in Transcona. He was involved with the Executive at East End Community Club, was a Board Member for many years at the Transcona Credit Union and was an enthusiastic member and President of the Winnipeg Irish Association where he sang with The Irish Tavern Singers. To add some excitement, Len accepted a contract to work in Zambia, Central Africa where he relocated with his family from 1978 TO 1981. It was in Africa that he developed his love for golf and shared his expertise and passion as a wine-maker to his many friends. The world travels of Len and Mary began in Africa and extended to Europe, North and South America. After 38 years with the CNR, Len retired to travel south with Mary to Tucson and Los Angeles. In 1995 they built their retirement home in Sandy Hook overlooking the 13th hole. In Sandy Hook his aptitude and generosity in fixing and maintaining the neighbourhood golf carts and other sundry toys earned Len the moniker of Mr. Fixit . He also enjoyed many other pastimes from radio-controlled airplanes, woodworking, reading, napping and gardening. Never without his Swiss army knife, Len could frequently be heard singing or whistling a tune or two. The silence will be deafening without you; we will miss you greatly. Our family would like to thank friends and family for their visits, kind thoughts and warm wishes over the past few weeks. We would also like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital whose dedication and compassionate care is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. Dennis Caners for his thoughtful and considerate care; Len truly appreciated his forthright manner and willingness to listen over the years. A Celebration of Len's Life will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
