ESTHER ROMEO With the love and support of her family, Esther Romeo passed away on June 7, 2010 at the St. Boniface General Hospital. Esther was predeceased by her husband, George Romeo. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her children, Marie, Peter (Carmaine), Georgina (Ken), Paul, Joanne (Arnie), her grandchildren, Erin (Matt), Fraser (Jennifer), Matt (Monika), Curtis, Kari, Lindsay, her great-granddaughter, Charlotte, as well as her brother, Carl (Mernie), sisters-in-law, Louise Romeo and Joan Pedersen, nieces, nephews and cousins. Esther was born in Denmark in 1923. At the age of five, she moved with her family to Canada, settling in Saskatchewan. As a young woman, Esther lived in Kingston and Hamilton, after joining the Canadian Armed Forces where she met her husband. Esther and George moved to Winnipeg to start their family. They built a home in South Transcona, where Esther lived until she passed away. She had an open door policy where family would visit and stay. A big yard allowed for great games of hide and go seek, and serious bocce ball tournaments. Every spring, Esther would faithfully plant a vegetable garden. This spring, Esther was unable to plant her vegetable garden which demonstrated to everyone that her fight with cancer was coming to an end. The Romeo, Acheson and Zommer family would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface General Hospital, Ward 5B, for their exceptional care and support. Esther was very independent and at the end of her life insisted that no one should feel sorry for her. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Parish, 710 Roanoke Street, with viewing held prior to service. Private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, people are encouraged to plant a garden or make a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba.
