IWAN PENIAK December 22, 1921- June 19, 2010 Peacefully, on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at St. Boniface Hospital, Iwan Peniak, aged 88, beloved husband of Natalia; dear father to Anne (Andrew) of Calgary; proud Dido to Vera, Michael (Kristen), Nina and Roma. He was predeceased by his brother, Vasyl and his granddaughter, Nadia. Iwan was born in the village of Svydova in Western Ukraine to Stefan and Maria, the second of two sons. He survived a difficult childhood and in 1942 was taken to be a farm labourer in Germany. He met, and six months later, married Natalia Tsar on September 8, 1945, a marriage bond that lasted nearly 65 years. They immigrated to Canada in 1949, settling in Winnipeg where their daughter Anne was born. Iwan was employed with Greb Shoes and Bristol Aerospace. He was deeply committed to his church, his family and the Ukrainian community. He was a quiet, industrious and resourceful individual known for his keen sense of humour and camaraderie with his friends. Iwan sang in various choirs in Ukraine, Germany and Winnipeg including the 1988 Millennium Choir which toured Rome. He especially enjoyed working in his garden where he found contentment and solitude. He also enjoyed drama, embroidery, pysanky writing and cooking. Iwan loved his grandchildren deeply and despite the separation of distance, he always attended key functions in their lives. Panachyda (prayers) will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 24 at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Munroe Ave. at Watt St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 25, also at the Church with Rev. Fr. E. Kwiatkowski officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The family extends its gratitude to Dr. Jerry Bergen for his many years of care as his physician and to the Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface Hospital for their compassion and care during Iwan's last days. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish to make a donation in Iwan's memory may do so to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6. I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 Tato, Dido- We love you deeply and will miss you always. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
