SOPHIE GILLIS Peacefully on June 30, 2010 at the age of 90, Sophie Gillis passed away with her family by her bedside. Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Cecil (2005) and son Terrance (1995), along with brothers Albert and Tony, and sisters Irene and May. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Elizabeth Hodgins, half brother Joe Chipilski, sister-in-law Marie Sanderson, and brother-in-law Gordon Gillis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sophie was born on November 1, 1919, in Fort William, Ontario, to Anton and Rose Roski. She was raised in Tyndall, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg at 17 years old, where she was employed with and retired from Quinton's Dry Cleaners. Sophie and Cecil were wed in Winnipeg in 1950. They celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in 2000 with many friends and family members. Throughout her lifetime, Sophie was active in community service. She belonged to St. Saviour's Anglican Church, square dancing groups, bowling teams, craft clubs, and many other organizations. Sophie and Cecil travelled across North America for many years, exploring places such as Alaska, Nevada, California, Eastern and Western Canada. Sophie's faith, hope and love, along with her compassion and sensitivity to others will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew her. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at the Maples Care home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 5, 2010 at St. Saviour's Anglican Church, 690 Munroe Avenue, at 1:00 p.m. with Reverends Simon Blaikie and Ted Nimik officiating. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, R.M. of Springfield. Pallbearers will be Gord Kilcup, Kyle Kilcup, Robert Hodgins, Jakub Miller, John Chrol and Terry Komadowski. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
