GERTRAUDE ERNA KROEMER (nee LUDWIG) Gertraude Kroemer died July 28, 2010 at the age of 75 after succumbing to a recently diagnosed cancer. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Mourning her loss with great sadness are her husband of 52 years, Bernhard Kroemer, daughters Sabina (Nathan) Jacob and Jo-Anne (Brian) Hass, grandchildren Anthony and Stephanie Jacob; and in Germany her sister Inge (Rainer) Bakker and sisters-in-law Brigitte Kromer and Ursula Ludwig Gertraude was born on February 14, 1935 in Breslau, Germany from where her family was forced to flee with many hardships at the end of the Second World War. After completing her education and professional training in the field of commerce, Gertraude immigrated to Canada to marry Bernhard in 1958. They started their new life in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, adapting well to the new language and culture. Upon moving to Winnipeg, Gertraude was employed for five years at Federated Insurance before dedicating herself to raising her children. She later worked for 14 years as Social Housing Manager at Villa Heidelberg Senior Housing. This was not only a job but an opportunity to reach out with personal help and friendship to many who were alone or needing a hand. Gertraude had a great appreciation for nature and there were many happy years at the Lake Winnipeg cottage. She was an avid hiker, swimmer, gardener and photographer. Her adventurous spirit got her through numerous brushes with the elements in the wilderness and took her on countless unconventional travel experiences with Bernhard throughout North America and beyond. She was a lifelong learner who never ceased to further her education in culture, geography, politics, language and nature study. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care Program, and the many dedicated nurses and staff at Concordia Hospital, 3rd floor. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010, 7:00 p.m. at Abundant Life Lutheran Church, 3486 Raleigh St., East St. Paul with Reverend Bob Jacob officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors Without Borders, or a charity of your choice.
