WILLIAM GEORGE ROBERTSON (ROBBIE) George Robertson passed away peacefully at St. Norbert Nursing Home on August 4, 2010 and the family would like to express their profound gratitude to the staff that provided excellent care during his stay there. George was predeceased by Eileen, his wife of 52 years in 1998, her parents Laura and James Rosevear, his parents, William and Margaret Robertson as well as sisters and brothers-in-law Laurie, Doreen, Dean, Bertha, Wendell, Georgina, Jim, Anne, Theresa, Tom and Allen. George is survived by his six children Lynne (Allen) Schade, Carol (Larry) Stewner, Gene (Joanney) Robertson, Peggy (Bruce) Paxton, Susan (Rick) Dionne and Barb (Ron) Gagnon. He will be sadly missed by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are brothers-in-law Jack (Sally), Bill (Elaine), sister-in-law Vi and sisters Margaret (Dave) and Jean as well as several nieces and nephews. George was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on February 2, 1925 where he played hockey using magazines as shin guards, delivered meat year round on a bicycle and came in second in a race using barrel slats as skis he made himself. Dad was very resourceful and he could fix anything. Dad joined the Army in 1941 and he was in North Africa, Belgium, Italy and Holland during the Second World War. Dad returned to Prince Albert where he married his best friend's sister in 1946. They moved to Kimberly, BC and had four children before Dad joined the Air Force in 1954. The family moved to Rivers, MB, and then Grostenquin, France where the youngest two children were born. The family settled in Winnipeg after brief postings in Portage la Prairie and Oromocto, NB. Dad was a member of the Army Navy and Air Force Veteran's Association Unit 283 and a member of the Charleswood Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Dad enjoyed playing bridge, he liked gardening and he loved to tinker. Dad would do anything for anyone and he spent countless hours repairing things that most would say were beyond repair. When Dad talked about moving out of his house, his neighbour requested his new address and said she was going to move in next door. Dad had that affect on people. Dad loved to socialize, he loved his family and he loved children. Dad loved to tease and tell jokes. Our friends would come to our house just to listen to him laugh. Dad's laugh was infectious. Dad was well into his retirement when a kid from down the back lane knocked on the door and asked Mom if George could come out to play. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services and interment will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Should friends choose, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY and CREMATORIUM 885-9715
