She died at her home peacefully in her sleep. Alice lived a long and full life. She was born on April 8, 1919 in New York City to Friedrich Wetzel and Bertha Wetzel. A sister, Hertha, and a brother, Frederick Wetzel, predeceased her. In Alice's youth her family's path also took her to live for times in Hamburg and Berlin, Germany and in Lithuania. She graduated from high school in New York City and met her first husband, Carl A. Ulrich, while working at the Wartburg, a German Lutheran orphanage in Mt. Vernon, NY. That marriage ended in divorce. While employed at Pan American World Airways in Long Island City, New York, Alice married Charles Wesley Winter, Jr. Together they began a marine electronics business in Annapolis, MD, where Alice became active in various civic groups and was one of the founding members of the Annapolis Opera. Alice's love of music and opera continued throughout her life. She initiated various beautification projects in Annapolis and continued that interest throughout her life as well. She shared a love of boating and things nautical with Charlie, and after years of seasonal living aboard their boat Quest, she and Charlie finally settled in Marathon, FL. As a professional volunteer Alice handled publicity for the Marathon unit of the U.S. Power Squadron and supported various artistic organizations, including the Marathon Concert Association. After Charlie Winter died, she married George R. J. Kulecki and continued to live in Marathon with George until his death in 1995. On New Year's Eve 1999, she married Bertram J. Hamilton, a Canadian, and, with Bert, divided her time between Marathon and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Shortly after they moved into a retirement home at South Port Square in Port Charlotte, FL, Bert Hamilton died. In Port Charlotte, Alice organized her last opera appreciation group, supported the Port Charlotte Symphony, and worshipped at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Alice is survived by her son, Carl W. Ulrich of Richmond, Virginia, his wife Christine Ulrich, her two granddaughters, Susanna Ulrich and her husband Dave Corey, and Catherine Ulrich and her husband Pawel Nazarewicz, and a grandson, Cassius Corey. Two stepsons, James Lee Winter and Charles Wesley Winter, III, predeceased her. Alice is survived by step-daughters Helga Reaves and by Juliette (Archie) Cooper. Through them all, Alice has been surrounded by a loving extended family. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Gables East of South Port Square in Port Charlotte, FL. Officiating will be Pastor Ken Barrios of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
