WALTER N. KOWALCHUK It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband and grandfather. Walter passed away on August 16, 2010 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Stella, daughter Tania, son Ray, daughter-in-law Ginette and grandchildren Carson and Kaitlyn. He is also survived by his father Nestor, brother Ivan (Arlene), sister Nadia and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Victoria, his father-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Born in Lansing, Michigan on November 19, 1942, he moved to Manitoba in 1951. After completing high school in Vita, Manitoba he attended psychiatric nurses training at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre and graduated in 1965. He continued his education and earned his Registered Nursing Diploma in 1972. Walter and his family moved to Steinbach in 1975, where he was employed by the Province of Manitoba as a Community Mental Health Worker until his retirement in 1997. Walter had many interests. He was a voracious reader, competitive card player, avid outdoorsman and hunter and enjoyed travelling and spending time with family and friends. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to CancerCare Manitoba, Dr. Mark Duerksen and the many nurses and aides for their kindness and compassion. In keeping with Walter's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service, instead a celebration of his life will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with lunch to follow. Interment of cremated remains will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined.
