JAMES (JIM) INGHAM ELLIOT PhD, PAg, FAIC Dean Emeritus Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba Died on August 28, 2010 at his residence in the arms of his loving wife, Elizabeth. Jim was born in Toronto, Ontario, Aug 21, 1938, son of the late James Adam Elliot and Dorothy Gertrude Ingham. Dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Larmond Elliot (Poirier), devoted father of Jacqueline May (Lawrence Weston) and Tracy Lee-Anne (Ken Alanen), loving stepfather of Mark Larmond (Suzanne), proud grandfather of Anthony and Bridget Weston, Evan and Liam Alanen and Rachel Larmond, and dear cousin of Barbara (Ingham) Taylor. Jim graduated from Ridley College, St. Catherines, Ontario where he played football and enjoyed the companionship of the Fresh Air Club. He attended the Ontario Agricultural College, graduating with a BSA, major in Animal Sciences (U of T) in 1962. He proceeded to graduate school at the University of Alberta, graduating with a MSc in 1965 and a PhD in 1969 both in Animal Nutrition, which launched a fascinating career in teaching, research, administration and international work. His first appointment was Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences at Macdonald College of McGill University. In the early seventies he joined the research Branch of Agriculture Canada where he enjoyed a successful career as a scientist and later a research manager. In 1989, Jim was invited to join the University of Manitoba as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Professor of Animal Science, a job he embraced with enthusiasm and found to be the most satisfying of his career. Prior to his retirement in 2000, he oversaw the physical and academic renewal of the Faculty, attracting some $20 million in external support. During this period he traveled often to Wuhan, China as Canadian Director of an academic exchange program with the Agricultural University. Jim was active in his professional association and on many volunteer and business boards. He was President of CSAS, MIA and served on the Board of the AIC Research Foundation. In the Manitoba community, he served on the board of the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre, the Red River Exhibition Association, the Smart Park Development Corporation (U of M), the Wildewood Golf and Country Club and Landmark Agricorp Ltd. He was also a member of the Board of the Western Beef Development Corporation and served on the Advisory Board to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Jim had an amazing inventory of interests and skills and enjoyed life to the fullest. Throughout his life he was an active outdoorsman, canoe tripping with family and friends and hunting and fishing across Canada with his many like-minded buddies. He especially enjoyed the annual fly-in fishing trip in northern Manitoba, the time he spent at his beloved cottage on Ruthledge Lake, sing songs around the campfire playing his guitar, bluegrass sessions at the hunting camp, lunches with his Ridley classmates, his evening scotch, and his life with Elizabeth and their children and grandchildren.
