GERTRUDE (GERTI) SCHULZ May 29, 1927 August 29, 2010 Peacefully, Gerti passed away on Sunday August 29 at St. Boniface Hospital. Gerti was born Gertrude Saleski on May 29, 1927, the eldest child of Reinhold and Ottilie Saleski, in Kendziorki, Poland. In 1945, she, along with her family, became refugees travelling through war torn Poland into Germany where they lived and worked until emigrating to Canada in 1949. The family settled in Rosenfeld, Manitoba. Gerti and her sister Jenny moved to Winnipeg to work. In 1953, she married Ed Schulz. In 1970, Gerti and Ed and their three sons moved to Greenwood Place. Over the years, Gerti worked at a number of places but found her true calling when she became one of the Eaton's girls where she remained for 20 years. Gerti was deeply devoted to her family, to Harry and Cindy, Richard and Donna, Robert and Pam and their children. She was thrilled with becoming a grandmother to Chris, Todd, Daniel and Stephanie. She loved watching Kurt and Lucas become young men. Gerti was delighted when Ali, Robert Jr, and Chanel would come to visit. And there was always a soft spot in her heart for her baby brother Gerry and sister Roselene Saleski. From the time that she and Ed moved to Greenwood Place, Gerti developed a strong passion for the neighbourhood and its residents. She considered them close friends and they reciprocated her feelings. Gerti had a very active role at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, volunteering and sitting on committees. Her heart was huge and her warmth contagious. Gerti always saw the positive side of things. Although the early years were hard, she felt that she had been truly blessed, particularly by family and friends. She touched others in so many ways; with her unfailing support, her love, her humour and her ready smile. This cheerful, positive attitude remained with her during the last months and weeks of her illness. Our family is indebted to Dr. Cliff Yaffe and the entire patient care team on 7A West. Words cannot describe our gratitude for the dedicated care Mom received on this unit. Funeral service will be held on September 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Cross. Auf wiedersehen Mom. NEIL BARDAL INC. FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • We are so sorry to hear of aunty's passing. It must be so sorrowful for you all. I have been doing a lot of thinking about the great visits we had when we were kids. All the good times at the farm and the fishing trips. I am so glad that some of you made it to the last reunion. I so wish I could come to the funeral to celebrate aunty's life but we will not be able to attend. My deepest sympathy to you all and we will be thinking of you tomorrow.
