HERMAN JONAS SKULASON With great sorrow the family announces the passing of Herman Jonas Skulason on September 2, 2010 at the age of 70. He is predeceased by his parents Jonas (1959) and Hrund (2010) as well as his sister and brother-in-law Sigrun and Jack Jonasson, sister Gudrun McInnis, brother Thor, and his sons David and Daniel. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Darrell Skulason, Emma, Elizabeth, Cassidy and their mother Lois; Diana Thorsteinson (Myles) Chris and Brett; Denise Smolinski (Darryl) Hannah and Ethan; and the children's mother Lillian Skulason. Also left to mourn his memory is his loving companion Elsie Ventnor and family, his sister Kris Laxdal (John), in-laws Gordon McInnis (Freda), Lawrence Gudmundson, Beverly and Merv Wagner, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was born on November 26, 1939 at the family farm at Fogruhlid in Geysir and went to school in Laufas and Arborg. He took over the Skulason farm after his father passed away and together with his wife Lillian and children, operated a dairy and grain farm for many years. In the early 70s he attended agricultural school during the winter to further his farming education. He was so proud when the Skulason farm received the century farm award for 100 years as a family farm and created a special spot to display the sign in the front yard for all to see. Dad also worked for many years at Interlake Cemetery Services. Dad was very active in the community, dedicating his time to numerous boards and committees including the Geysir Hall, Geysir Cemetery, Geysir Lutheran church, Northstar Creamery, Arborg Co-op, Arborg curling rink, 4-H club, and the Rod and Gun club. He was a member of the Arborg Legion, and enjoyed spending time with his many Legion buddies. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He looked forward to deer and moose hunting season and enjoyed many good times with his hunting buddies. He had a soft spot for his many pets including many St. Bernards and his cat Koosta. Dad was very proud of his Icelandic heritage and really enjoyed his trip to Iceland in 1998. Dad had a talent for woodworking and enjoyed spending time in his wood shop creating many beautiful pieces of furniture that will be treasured by his friends and family. Fondly known as the Prime Minister of Geysir or Hermie, Dad had a kind heart and a great sense of humour. We love him and will miss him dearly. Special thanks to Elsie for being there to care for Dad and providing love and companionship during their many happy years together. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Ardal-Geysir Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arborg followed by interment at Geysir Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Geysir Cemetery or CancerCare Manitoba. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
