Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES ALEXANDER (ALEX) GRANT November 6, 1916 - September 15, 2010 It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the peaceful passing of Alex Grant, aged 93, at Grace General Hospital on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Margaret. Dad is survived by his children: Jim (Anne Marie), Bruce (Pat) and Marilyn (Bob Clasper); his beloved grandchildren: Kyle (Michelle), Kevin (Julia) of Vancouver, Kristopher; Curtis, Candace (Brian Kittredge), Malina (Nathan Shuy) and Larissa of California; Brian, Kimberly, Douglas; step-grandchildren: Ricardo, Daniel, Maria and Monique; great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Grant (Candace and Brian) and Winston (Malina and Nathan) of California, and sister Dorothy of Vancouver. Alex will be fondly remembered by niece June Lychek of Thunder Bay and his many close friends and neighbours (with special heartfelt appreciation to Helen and Joanne Sprange). Dad was born November 6, 1916; he was very much an icon of his generation and will lovingly be remembered as Head of the Family . Dad's work ethic and dedication to family and church was nurtured early on in life as in the mid 1920s he was active with the Boy's Work Department at Knox United Church. Dad attended Daniel MacIntyre School and University College. Later dad joined the Young People's Group where he met his future wife, Margaret and eventually married in 1941. Shortly thereafter dad was called to service with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following his return dad moved his family to St. James. Dad's love of finance and accounting earned him a position with McLeods Limited where he went on to become Comptroller. Following dad's retirement in 1976 he continued his volunteer commitment with Knox United Church as treasurer of the Board of Managers. Dad was an ardent fan of the Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Blue Jays and an avid patron of the Arts. Dad and mom rarely missed an opportunity to attend the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg Opera. He was a voracious reader (he will surely be missed by the St. James-Assiniboia Library), enjoyed the daily crosswords, enthusiastically followed the stock market and proudly and passionately pursued his Scottish roots - developing quite the family tree in his later years. Dad always found the greatest satisfaction and pride in being surrounded by his family and never missed an opportunity to boast of his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. Dad and mom enjoyed many wonderful vacations spending time in Florida, cruising and especially loved their time at their cottage at Red Rock Lake (of course we must not forget the many memorable Duffield Street Gang parties). Dad presided over every family get-together (and there were many) as the proudest dad, papa, grampa, grampa Grant ever! The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the all of the nurses, doctors and staff at the Grace General Hospital, 3rd Floor. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join in a celebration of Alex's life on Tuesday September 28, 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Ave. If friends so desire, donations in Alex's memory may be made to the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 2M7.
