HELLEN MILDRED HOVMAND Hellen Hovmand, 85, passed away of natural causes on October 1, 2010 at Riverview Health Centre. Hellen was born on May 19, 1925, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was the daughter of Samuel and Natalie (Nellie) Komishon. On December 17, 1955, she married Neil Hovmand and together they raised two children. Though Hellen was first and foremost a dedicated homemaker and mother, she also assisted her husband in managing a successful family business. Hellen was a former president of the Rotary Anns and she actively volunteered her time for community programs such as Meals on Wheels. In addition, she enjoyed many other activities with Neil and the family, including golfing, gardening and fishing. Many pleasant hours were spent at St. Charles Country Club and the family cabin in Lake of the Woods area. Eleven years ago, Hellen suffered a physically debilitating stroke. Although the stroke did take her voice, it never took her spirit. She remained an integral part of all family gatherings and she continued to take great pride in the accomplishments of her grandchildren. Hellen is survived by her daughter Jane Gordon; son Thor Hovmand; son-in law Brian Gordon; daughter-in-law Nancy Hovmand; six grandchildren Meaghan, Elizabeth, Marsha, B.G. (Brian), Lindsay and Eric; sister Marilyn Ford; and brother Jim Komishon. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband Neil, and sisters Francis Pawlinski and Olga (Ollie) Schnerch. Our family extends our heartfelt appreciation to all staff at Riverview Health Centre (4th Floor). If friends so desire, memorial tributes can be made in Hellen's memory to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Memorial services for Hellen Hovmand will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 6 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. After the service, relatives and friends are welcome to attend a reception at St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Boulevard. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
