Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH KATZ After a courageous battle with cancer, Ruth Katz, passed away on December 16, 2010. Ruth was born on February 23, 1924 to Miriam and Chaim Corin. On December 5, 1948 she married Hymie Katz, her husband of almost 50 years, until his passing in October, 1998. Ruth was also predeceased by her younger sister, Connie Lenoff. Ruth is survived by her son, Murray (Cheryl) and granddaughter Farah. She will be missed by her brother-in-law Robert Lenoff, her nieces, Marilyn Dudeck, Barb Kravetsky and their families. Ruth was an independent, energetic, hard working woman who enjoyed life to the fullest. As a young woman, after graduating from high school, she moved briefly to Vancouver to explore what life had to offer. Upon her return to Winnipeg, she met and married Hymie Katz. She worked tirelessly alongside Hymie in their grocery store, in Moose Jaw and in Winnipeg. Ruth later utilized her skills in Yiddish translations working for the Jewish Historical Society and the Yiddishe Vort newspaper. Never wanting to remain idle, Ruth began doing volunteer work several years ago at Age and Opportunity and later at the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre. It was here she found her second home spending several days a week at the reception desk, making phone calls and participating in the social programs. Her capabilities and commitment to her volunteer work were recognized through being the recipient of the Manitoba Council on Aging award in 2007. Family and friends were an important part of Ruth's life. She cherished spending time with her husband and son, taking summer vacations in Gimli, and shopping trips to Grand Forks. She remained very close to her sister, brother-in-law and her nieces and nephews over the years. When Murray and Cheryl married, Ruth was delighted that her small family expanded to include her in-laws as well. Ruth also enjoyed her only granddaughter Farah and would take pleasure in the various activities they shared. Ruth's sociability and sense of humour gained her many friends over the years. She enjoyed numerous activities from browsing the shopping malls, casino trips, to concerts and theatre. Ruth dealt with her illness with dignity and grace. The family would like to thank Dr. Polimeni, the staff at CancerCare and the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital. Funeral services were held at Congregation Etz Chayim on December 19, 2010. Pallbearers were Ian Dudeck, Michael Dudeck, Cary Kravetsky, Tim Ginter, Jeff Hirsh and Ron Cantor. Donations in Ruth's memory can be made to a charity of ones choice.
