EIRIKUR (ERIC) HARALDUR DOLL It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved uncle Eirikur on Friday, January 14, 2011 at the age of 94. He was the much adored son of Icelandic parents Maria and Sigurbjorn Doll, and brother to Emily (Kari) Oleson and Margaret (Eddi) Johannson. He has also been the cherished uncle to many nieces, nephews and their families including Trygvine (Jim), Kristjan (JoAnn), Maurice, Dennis (Nukte), Brian (Joanne), Fred; Edward (Kathy), Loris (Ben), David (Jane), Faye (Raymond), Joanne (Elton); and Cindy (Lorne). Eric was born in Progress, Manitoba on December 3, 1916. Later the family moved to Odda, a homestead one mile South of Riverton. He started fishing on Lake Winnipeg at a very early age with his father, and the entire family would join them at their fishing station at Reindeer Island as well as at other locations. He was fluent in speaking Icelandic, and was proud of his Icelandic heritage. Eric loved his dog sled team, and was deeply saddened when he had to part with them. He enjoyed farming and also operated a mink ranch during the 1950s and 1960s. He was very fond of his first car, a beautiful pale blue Henry J, which he kept in mint condition until 2004. Uncle Eirikur was a devoted caregiver to his mother throughout her illness, and until her passing in 1972. Eirikur spent a large portion of his life residing on his family farm in Riverton, and he often stayed with his niece Trygvine and they enjoyed conversing in Icelandic. His nephews enjoyed spending time with him and learning some of his skills. In 1973, he started working at the Hnausa Training Centre for Fishing until his retirement in the early 1980s. He continued to live at his home in his senior years and later spent winters at the Riverton Lodge where he formed new friendships, including that of special friend Helen. In 2006, he moved to Betel Nursing Home in Gimli, where he stayed with an alert mind until his passing. The family extends special appreciation to the Betel Staff for the kindness and care that they provided. Pallbearers will be nephews Edward, David, Kristjan, Dennis, Brian, Fred, and great-nephew Colin. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 1:30 p.m in the Riverton Lutheran Church with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Blessud Se Minning Hans Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
