SHIRLEY MITCHELL
Date of Passing: Jan 16, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY MITCHELL With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Shirley Mitchell, on January 16, 2011. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Bill. She is survived by her daughters Dawn (Garth), Penni, Kelli (Allan); her beloved granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Samantha and Rachel; her brother, Bill (Brenda) Vogler; brother-in-law Bob (Eileen); sister-in-law Joan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley was born in Vancouver, BC in 1931 to Myrtle and Hector Vogler. She left home at the age of 16 to strike out on her own, taking her first secretarial job. She and her future husband Bill met in Victoria while he was in the Navy. They married in 1953, and shortly after the birth of their first daughter, moved to Winnipeg. Two more daughters completed the family and Shirley stayed at home to raise her girls. Eventually, Shirley re-entered the workforce in various school offices in Windsor Park and enthusiastically volunteered at the Manitoba Museum for more than 25 years. She found working in the archaeology and human history departments fascinating and rewarding. Shirley dedicated her life to her family and doted on her granddaughters, with whom she developed especially close relationships. After her husband of 57 years passed away in March of 2010, Shirley's health began to deteriorate. She died quietly at Victoria General Hospital, with family at her side. At Shirley's request, no formal service will be held. Her ashes will be interred at a later date. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to St. Boniface Hospital, Seven Oaks General Hospital, River Park Gardens, and the Victoria General Hospital for watching over Shirley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Museum at 190 Rupert Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0N2.
