ISRAEL (IZZY) SHAPIRO With profound sadness we announce the passing of Israel Izzy Shapiro on January 2, 2011 at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Shirley; his children Paul (Jessica), Charlene (Harry), and Michelle (Michael); brother Harry (Ros); grandchildren Erin, Ari, Justin, Brendan, and Shayna. He also leaves to mourn brothers and sisters-in-law Esther Gardner, Dr. Irv and Toby Vinsky, Jack and Bernice Druzin, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Esther Shapiro, brother Jack and sister-in-law Sheila Shapiro, mother-in-law Molly Vinsky, and brother-in-law Jack Gardner. Izzy was born on May 28, 1931 and grew up in Winnipeg's North End. He had a very close relationship with his parents and brothers which continued throughout his life. Togetherness and family were the cornerstones of everything that was important to him and how he lived his life. Izzy and Shirley were married in 1958 and soon had their own family. Izzy was a dedicated husband and father. He often remarked that the years with his young family were the best years of his life. Later he became a proud zaida who loved his grandchildren dearly and cherished spending time with them. Izzy worked at Kromar Printing for 42 years. He was highly respected and valued, and received an honorary plaque to recognize his outstanding contributions to the company. Izzy took pride in everything that he did. He was a self-taught handyman who could build and fix anything. He was an avid sports fan, well read, and loved history. He enjoyed camping, travelling, going to the theatre, and out for dinner with friends. Izzy will always be remembered as a kind and honorable man who endeared himself to all. He will be forever loved and missed. Funeral services were held on January 5, 2011 at Etz Chayim Synagogue. Pallbearers were Harry Schwartz, Michael Tessler, Cory Shapiro, David Shapiro, Bryan Druzin and Howie Gilmore. Honourary pallbearers were Dr. Irv Vinsky and Jack Druzin. The family would like to thank their relatives, friends, and medical staff for all their support and care. Donations in Izzy's memory can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
