Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMATEO (MATTHEW) MIR On February 9, 2011 after a prolonged illness, Mateo, beloved husband of Antonia, passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at 81 years of age. Mateo was born October 19, 1929 in Mallorca, Spain. He is survived by Antonia, his wife of 63 years, his brother Pepe (Maria) and sister Antonia, his three daughters, Mary (Dick) Cairns, Frances (friend Rick) Desautels, Carmen (Gerald) Lambert, his grandchildren Michael (Ann), Jackie, Natalie (friend Justin), Matthew, Charlie, Joshua and Jordyn; three great-grandchildren Declan, Kate and Claire. He was predeceased by his parents Mateo and Maria, his brother Juanito; his in-laws Jose and Antonia Esbarranch. Mateo was raised in Mallorca, Spain. At the age of 19, he met the love of his life and soulmate, Antonia. They were married January 7, 1955. Dad had a thirst for life and an adventurous spirit, which led them overseas to Canada seeking a better life for his wife and children in 1956. Grandpa was creative, artistic, and free spirited. He had a zest for life, an incredible sense of humour, and a passion for food and family. It brought him great joy to prepare Paella, empanadas, and ensaimadas. He was adamant about sharing and passing on his Mallorcan culture, which he was always very proud of, with everyone he knew. The career he chose as a pastry chef allowed him to express his talent and bring joy to the many that enjoyed his craft. He had strong work ethic and always strived for improvement. He spent the majority of his career in Winnipeg designing specialty cakes and pastries for any and all occasions at Tasty Bread and the Eiffel Tower. He was the Cake Boss of Winnipeg. Once they had successfully raised their family, they were fortunate enough to own a home in Mallorca and enjoy many retirement years with family and friends back on their beautiful paradise Island. The family is grateful to our many wonderful friends and family. A very special thank you to Dr. Garcia, Dr. Crawford, Dr. Gureshi, and the wonderful staff for the care, genuine concern, and compassion given to our beloved Dad and Grandpa at St. Boniface and Riverview Palliative Care during his final days on earth. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., on Monday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to St. Boniface Palliative Care.
