ROBERT BROCK MCARTHUR Peacefully after a lengthy illness, R. Brock McArthur passed away on Monday, February 14, 2011 in Victoria, BC, at the age of 86. Predeceased by his wife Florence (nee Davidson) in 1998, he will be missed by his daughter Linda (Arthur) Giesbrecht, and grandsons Kevin (Megan Strutt) and Matthew; his son Brian (Meredith) and grandchildren Shanley (Andrew) Matthews, Patrick, Douglas (Kristyn Dunn) and great-grandson Adam, and Paul; daughter Shannon (Neil) Cormie, and granddaughters Jamie, Stephanie, and Sarah; and his brother Paul. Brock was born January 27, 1925 in Winnipeg, where he grew up and attended Kelvin High School. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war ended, Brock enrolled in the University of Manitoba, where he obtained his law degree in 1950. He married Florence the same year, and practiced law with his father, Clarence V. McArthur, KC. Brock served a term in the 1960s as Chairman of the Winnipeg School Board, and also ran unsuccessfully for the Liberals in the Manitoba provincial election. In 1980, Brock and Florence moved to British Columbia, eventually settling in Victoria where Brock practiced law with the government of British Columbia. They were active members of Oxford United Church in Winnipeg, and Gordon Head United Church in Victoria. Brock was a long time member of the Lions Club in Winnipeg, and was involved as a volunteer with the District of Saanich Water Board in Victoria. The family is extremely grateful to the staff of Selkirk Place for the excellent care that Brock received while he resided there. A memorial service will be held at Gordon Head United Church, 4201 Tyndall Ave, Victoria, on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.
