LILY (DVERIS) PORTNOY 1917 - 2011 Peacefully with family by her side, Lily Portnoy died at the age of 93 on February 17, 2011 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Lily is survived by her beloved brother David Dveris (Claire) and sister-in-law Lil Duboff. Lily was predeceased by her husband Joe Portnoy, brother Harry Dveris, sister-in-law Ruthie Dveris, and parents Israel and Sarah Dveris. Lily will be sadly missed by her devoted nephews and nieces Martin Dveris (Linda), Ronald Dveris, Jeff Dveris, Marcey Dveris (Neil MacKinnon), Nori Korsunsky (Lyle) and Lisa Dveris (Tom Stroud). Lily felt very blessed by the love and devotion of her great-nephews and nieces Adam Dveris (Shari), Sean Dveris (Courtney), Ryan Korsunsky, Hannah Korsunsky, Jesse Dveris Oberman, Cara Dveris , Shira Dveris, Reynaldo Dveris, and great-great-niece Sadie Dveris. Lily was lovingly known as Aya to all her kids . Lily was born on April 16, 1917 in Kilikiv, Poland. At an early age her family immigrated to Winnipeg to begin a new life. For 44 years Lily worked and later managed the family butcher shop, I. Dveris Kosher Meats, at the corner of Pritchard and Parr. In 1938, Lily married her beloved Joe Portnoy. They enjoyed life together for 59 years until Joe passed away in 1997. Family meant everything to Lily. Each and every family member held a special place in her heart. Among Lily's greatest joys were cooking, baking and feeding her family and friends. Lily cherished the time spent with each of her kids , who all benefitted from her deep love and great wisdom. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff on 5B West at the St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care of Lily over the past two months. Funeral services were held on February 20, 2011 at the Chesed Shel Emes, with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were her family members: Martin Dveris, Jeff Dveris, Lyle Korsunsky, Neil MacKinnon, Tom Stroud, Sean Dveris, Ryan Korsunsky and Jesse Dveris Oberman. Honorary pallbearers were Linda Dveris, Ronald Dveris, Adam Dveris, Marcey Dveris, Nori Korsunsky, Lisa Dveris, Hannah Korsunsky, Shira Dveris, Cara Dveris and Reynaldo Dveris. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Fund, or a charity of one's choice.
