Ruth was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, the eldest of four siblings. She attended Normal school and taught at Pine Ridge School for a few years before she married in August of 1953 to Stephen Ilczuk. They had 24 years of marriage before his passing. She had three daughters and helped raise others including her nephew with love and care. Ruth and Steve were pioneers at Betula Lake in the Whiteshell area; their summer cottage was a place where many friends and family were welcomed. She made time to volunteer her expertise in costuming for the Trembita School of Dance but will be most remembered for her many years of accompaniment by piano for the Jewish and Russian choirs of Winnipeg. She was a volunteer driver for over 15 years for Meals on Wheels and a member of the United Church Women's Organization of Manitoba. She will be missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, whom she loved as her own; Joanne (Wacek) Ochman and Susan (Floyd) Lee and Robert Peace; as well as her cherished granddaughter Sophia Lee. Her sister and brothers, Doreen Frank, Robert (Rita) Hayward and George Hayward and many cousins, nieces and nephew. Predeceased was her husband Stephen, and her beloved eldest daughter Linda Peace. A gathering to celebrate the life of Ruth is taking place at Harrow United Church, 955 Mulvey, on Tuesday, March 15 at 11:00 a.m., luncheon to follow.
