AUDREY MILES 1913 - 2011 Marjorie Audrey Miles passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on March 14, 2011 at the age of 97 years after a lifetime of independence, purpose, good health and contentment. Audrey was predeceased in 1993 by Edwin Richard (Buck), her loving husband of 50 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, Ira and Lulu Taylor, her brother Rodger Taylor and her sister Georgene Taylor. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild: Richard (Joyce) in Creemore, ON and grandson Jamie in Toronto; Andrew (Pat) in Winnipeg and grandsons Matthew (Christine Ens) and Mark; and Mary in Winnipeg and granddaughter Rebecca Blight (Barry) and great-grandson Nicholas in Kingston, ON. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Trudy Taylor and her husband, Paul Van Vlack in Picton, ON. Born in Amherst, NS, Audrey was educated in Amherst and at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB, graduating with two degrees at the age of 20. On graduation from Mount Allison University in 1933, her yearbook stated: Audrey is a true student. She has added lustre to the annals of the 1933 class by her scholastic achievements. Maintaining a very high standard in her studies she has proven to be thoroughly practical in other branches of her work. She is one of Mount Allison's most gifted and versatile graduates. She taught during the 1930s and the Second World War throughout rural Nova Scotia and in Halifax. In 1949, she moved with her family to Winnipeg where she resided the rest of her life, taught for many years at St. Mary's Academy and formed lifelong friendships. Although a Manitoban for 62 years, Audrey was always a Maritimer at heart and maintained many connections with her Nova Scotian roots throughout her life. Audrey was proud of her husband, her family, her education and her teaching career. She lived her life with dignity, determination and grace, and of course, always expressed herself with proper grammar! She was quiet and unassuming throughout her entire life, grateful for all the blessings she received. A meal shared in her home will always be remembered for its quality, creativity and the love she put into its preparation. In earlier years, Audrey was a dedicated, reliable and hard working volunteer with the St. Agnes Guild of the Children's Hospital, the Manitoba Home Economics Teachers' Association, the University Women's Club and the U.C.W. of St. Andrew's River Heights United Church. In recent years Audrey appreciated relationships with friends and staff at The Wellington, which she called home for 15 years, and the Rosewood where she lived for the last two years. Audrey's family expresses its appreciation to all the care givers in her residences and at the Victoria Hospital who treated her with such compassion, respect and an understanding of the strength of her character in the last years and days of her life. It allowed her to pass away peacefully after a good night's sleep as she had wished. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. If friends wish, a donation may be made in Audrey's memory to St. Andrew's River Heights United Church Foundation, 255 Oak St., Winnipeg, MB R3M 3P7 or to a charity of choice.
