ALPHILD SYNOVE HOOEY 1917 - 2011 Alphild passed peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 93 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Archie and first born daughter, Patricia Lynn and later, sister Sigrid and her husband Nelson Thornsteinson and brother-in-law Jack McVicar and son-in-law Bob Brooker. She is survived by her children Robert, Mark, Barbara and Tom, brother Bob Sandberg and his wife Diane, sister Hazel McVicar, grandson Stephen Brooker, granddaughters Lyndsey and Michelle Hooey and their mother Jackie, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Widowed when her children were young, she raised them on her own with the support of family, friends, and the church. Alphie had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. Even though money was tight she was able to take her children on many exciting trips with the help of family passes with Air Canada. In her 70's she toured Norway with her brother Bob and sister-in-law Diane visiting family in her mother's home in Fevag and her father's birthplace in Leknes, Lofoten. Alphie loved spending time with her grandchildren. She set up a crib in her spare room when the first was born and many happy sleepovers were spent with Lyndsey, Michelle and Stephen over the years. She also loved cottage life and wonderful times were spent at her parent's cottage at Winnipeg Beach (now her brother Bob's cottage), her friend Marge's cottage at Jessica Lake, her friend Ronnie's cottage at Spruce Sands and her daughter Barbara's cottage at Beresford Lake. Alphie's early career included hairdressing and employment with Mitchell Copp Jewelers. She was later employed with Health Canada from age 48 until her retirement at age 65. It was here that she met her dear friends Ronnie, Mat and Rose with whom she played bridge every lunch hour. After retirement they continued to play twice a week until declining health prevented it. Alphie was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church all of her life and she had many supportive friends there. She participated in LCW, quilting and of course the once famous Christmas Tea and Craft Sale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. A special thanks to the Staff at Misericordia Personal Care home for the excellent and thoughtful care she received during her stay there. Alphie was a gymnast in her younger years and remained athletic for most of her life. Now that she is freed from the confines of her declining body, we know that she is doing handstands in a better place. Sadly many of her friends have now passed but for those of you who remain and are able to join us in celebrating her life, the service will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 600 Minto Street at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011.
