DOREEN MARION DOHERTY (nee GAUTHIER) It is with sadness that the family of Doreen Doherty announces her passing on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the age of 58, after a brave battle with cancer. Doreen is predeceased by her father Gus and brother Bruce. She will be very missed by her children Alareen and David; her sister Diane; her mother Patricia; her nephew and his wife Jason and Jenna, and their two children Hanna and Noel; and her good friends Jim, Rose, Don, Andrew, Molly, and Shauna. Doreen was born with her siblings in Kenora, ON and as a child moved to Winnipeg. Doreen called many places home throughout Canada during her adult life, including Iqaluit, Edmonton, Halifax, and finally Winnipeg. Doreen was a creative and artistic soul, who took to painting during her first battle with cancer. Her sunflower painting was adopted by her employer, U.F.C.W. Canada, as a symbol of members' charitable efforts and represented all of Doreen's greatest attributes; this was a great honour for Doreen. She was also an avid reader; you could often find her with a full cup of coffee and a book in hand. Doreen loved to spend time outdoors; she especially loved spending time at Jim's cottage reading in the sunshine. Mostly, Doreen loved spending time with her children. She was very proud of her daughter and son's academic achievements, and the people that they became. She loved her children very much. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, reception to follow. Flowers are welcomed, or donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

I had the privilege of working with Doreen when she managed the legal aid office where I worked in Iqaluit, Nunavut in the late 1970s. It was a small, but busy office in a cross cultural environment with Inuit clients and employees. Doreen was efficient, gracious, professional and personable and I am sorry to hear of her passing. Her children should be proud of the important contribution Doreen made to successfully demonstrating a new approach to delivering legal aid services in the north - through 'storefront' legal aid clinics rather than 'fly in fly out' circuit court based systems. The model of our pilot project, Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik, was successful and has become the model for regional delivery of legal aid services in Nunavut and the NWT. - Posted by: (Senator) Dennis Patterson (Former Boss) on: Mar 01, 2013
