MATHEW BURTNIAK Dad died peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by son Don (Audrey), daughter Judy (Len), son Bob (Shelley) and grandsons Dax and Reiss. Also survived by brothers John and Peter (Eldeanna), sisters Helen and Frances (Tom); brother-in-law Matt; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by wife Lydia (February 2007); his parents; brother Steve; sisters Ann, Mary, Olive and Jean; sister-in-law and four brothers-in-law. Dad was born October 19, 1925 to William and Nellie (Boyko) on the farm in Dauphin, MB. He joined the army in 1942 and served overseas during the Second World War. Upon returning to Canada, he met Lydia and they were married November 28, 1946 in Calgary, AB. They returned to Manitoba living first in Glenella and then moving to Stony Mountain in 1952 after getting a job at the Penitentiary. Dad retired in 1985 after 33 years of service. He enjoyed curling (even scored an eight ender), bowling, fishing at the cottage and watching his two grandsons play soccer, lacrosse and hockey. He was a member of the Stony Mountain Legion Branch 142 for over 59 years! His family would like to extend thanks to all the staff on Lodge 6 East of the Deer Lodge Centre for the great care given to dad during his final days. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. The service will conclude at the chapel. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to Deer Lodge Centre, Stony Mountain United Church or a charity of one's choice.
