ARTHUR STODDARD EMMONS, JR. January 18, 1926 - June 9, 2011 Arthur Stoddard Emmons, 85, finished his courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease on June 9, 2011, in Atlanta, Georgia, surrounded by his daughters. Art was a loving husband to his wife of 61 years, Billie McMurry Emmons, who recently passed away, and wonderful father to Mickey Emmons Wener (husband Jim) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Jennifer Emmons Michaels (husband Tom) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Susan Emmons Hatfield (husband Mark) of Nairobi, Kenya. Art has six grandchildren, including Sarah Emmons Wener of Winnipeg. Following service with the Merchant Marines in the Second World War, he graduated from Washington and Lee University. After 40 years, he retired from Ashland Oil, Inc. as Manager of Fleet Purchasing. Art served in leadership positions with many organizations and showed his caring spirit and talent with a chain saw as a member of the Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief Team. He approached sports with competitive enthusiasm, enjoying handball, racquetball, boating, water and snow skiing, camping, exercising, hunting and fishing. On the family farm, he was an avid gardener, with surplus produce supporting his friends and the local soup kitchen. He cared for the horses, kept up extensive walking trails, and was always happy to share his unbeatable grilled steaks and BBQ chicken. Art was a friend to all who crossed his path. Funeral services will be held in Ashland, Kentucky on June 15.
