MELVIN MORKEN March 11, 1927 - June 15, 2011 Melvin passed away peacefully at the Altona Hospital, on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Melvin was predeceased by his loving wife Gladys on February 23, 2007, his parents Oliver and Alma, five sisters and six brothers. Melvin is survived by his daughters Virginia Weiss and Brenda Sims; son-in-law Dennis Weiss; grandchildren Reishan and Curtis Weiss, Tyson Stevens and Joshua Anderson; great- grandson Jaeger Weiss; sisters-in-law Winnie Morken, Lovina (Gilmore) Torkelson and Darlene (Richard) Culleton. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends and sorely missed by his loving companion Trigger. Melvin was born and raised in Piney where he met and married his childhood sweetheart Gladys Doreen Paulson. They were wed on November 20, 1951 and moved to Dominion City in 1957 with their three-year-old daughter Virginia. Melvin worked as a Mechanic for Friesen's Garage until being hired by the Manitoba Highways Dept. where he worked until retirement. Melvin led a very active life. Watching television or reading was not for him. Together, Melvin and Gladys loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile, camp, dance up a storm, play cards and socialize with their many friends. His living room is a testament to their sporting life. Their early retirement years found them on the road pulling the boat behind the camper truck. Their travels with bus tours took them from Mexico to Churchill but Dad always said there was no place better than home and his home was always open to new and old acquaintances alike. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Dominion City United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff of the Altona Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. Vita Funeral Home Vita, Manitoba In Care of Arrangements 1-204-425-3114
