HERBERT MAXWELL MCDOWALL August 23, 1920 - June 16, 2011 Herbert Maxwell McDowall passed away in his sleep June 16, 2011 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 90 from complications due to lung cancer. He was born in Winnipeg to James Lockhart and Annie McDowall. A proud Canadian, he served in Normandy with 2nd T.A.F. in Europe until the end of the Second World War. He spent post-war years with NATO forces in Germany and the United Nation Forces in Egypt. He continued to spend many years with the Search and Rescue Squad after returning to Winnipeg in 1964. Herb was a sports enthusiast, both as a fan and participant. An avid curler, he was initiated into the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in Edinburgh while participating in the World's Bonspiel in 1958. Herb also spent many years cultivating a large garden at his home in St. James. He also enjoyed spending time with his fellow veterans at the Charleswood Legion. He was predeceased by his wife, Gwendolyn Violet. He was also predeceased by his brother, Lionel McDowall of Winnipeg. He is survived by his four children, Ron (Barbara) McDowall of Pinawa, Barbara Thompson of Winnipeg, Valerie (Sheridan) Gaudet of Chilliwack, BC, and Herb (Stephanie) McDowall of Chilliwack, BC. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Monday, June 20 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn immediately following the funeral.
