Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY NICHOLSON April 10, 1922 - September 9, 2011 Shirley, who was born in Essex England, came to Winnipeg at age seven and grew up in Norwood Flats. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in the midst of the Second World War, she went to Britain with the R.C.A.F. in the Women's Division. She completed the diploma course in social work at the University of Manitoba, then, went to Montreal to take further courses and to work, remaining there for over 30 years. In 1980 Shirley returned to Manitoba and worked part-time in the Social Work Department of the Health Sciences Centre and cared for her mother until the latter's death. After she retired, Shirley was free to travel visiting relatives in Britain and Pennsylvania, USA, spending part of a winter in Portugal and enjoying trips to Kenya, India and Costa Rica. For a number of years Shirley was a member of the Universal Unitarian Church of Winnipeg where she got involved with hosting New Comers to Canada through the International Centre on Edmonton Street. An ash interment will take place in The Garden of Memories on Tuesday, September 20 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 2:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
